Motab Christmas Concert

Last night Spencer and I went with his brother and his wife to the Motab Christmas Concert! We first met and had dinner and then instead of driving, we road the Frontrunner train to downtown Salt Lake and then switched to the Trax train to get to the concert. The concert was a lot of fun!! Afterward, we were able to walk through temple square and get pictures!! Then we all thought we were good with timing with Trax and Frontrunner, but come to find out, after we had taken Trax to get to Frontrunner, we missed the one we wanted! We had to wait almost 90 minutes until the next one which was the last one...aahh, memories, haha!! Luckily, there was a bus station to wait at so we didn't freeze!! It was a lot of fun and we laughed all night!!

Riding to the concert!!

Waiting for the concert to start!

Spencer standing next to the statue of Spencer W. Kimball. He was named after this prophet!!

Enjoying the lights at Temple Square, love this time of year!!

No big deal...just missed our train and have to wait almost 90 minutes...aahh, memories!!

Tis the Season

I love this time of year and love to decorate my home just like my mom always did!! I held out until Thanksgiving was over because I never want to forget what an important holiday it is, but at times it got tempting with everyone starting to decorate for Christmas around me! I love a clean house, Christmas tree lit, and cuddling with my husband and doggie dogs while watching a movie and eating snacks!! We actually watched Hunger Games for the first time after all the decorations were up, I know! Where have we been??

10k race

Thanksgiving morning Spencer and I woke up bright and early to meet up with my mom and brother in law to run in The Human Race. My brother in law owns Port of Subs and was sponsoring so how could we turn it down, lol?! At least that's what I told myself, hehe! We were wanting to run the 10k. I was so excited, but also a bit nervous because I have done 5k's, but never a 10k. The night before, we found out my brother in law's brother accidentally signed us all up for the 5k, so the nerves left and I was ready to run!! Well, we all met up at the race bright and early and it is so cold (I'm literally shivering, eek!), but we are excited and ready!! We got there early and the 10k had not even started yet, so of course when they announce the 10k runners to start lining up at the start line, we all look at each other and say let's go!! If I could describe my family with one story, this would be a good one! We are always up for the challenge and definitely encourage each and every one!! None of us thought we were running over 6 miles that morning when we first got there, but we did and we all did awesome. I love running with my mom! She's my fav!! I just adore her! I get my pace from her and I'm proud :) Spencer and my brother in law were way ahead of us from the get go. They're amazing!! I love my family so much and had so much fun with them during the race!! I cannot wait to do it again!!

Later, we all had Thanksgiving dinner at my sister's house. It was so fun and delicious!!
I love this time of year and being able to spend it with family!! We have so much to be thankful for!!

Waiting...

Waiting is hard. Actually, it is the hardest thing both Spencer and I have been through. It's not easy. We long to be parents each and every day. It is constantly in our thoughts. We have to remind ourselves that very few know how we feel and that it is not a part of everyone's life like it is ours. We have good days, bad days, and really bad days. There are days nothing anyone can say to me to make this journey feel any easier...until now. My best friend has been through infertility just like we have and has adopted 2 beautiful children. She has a blog and had another adoptive mom post on her blog. She was writing to her son and her words touched me like nothing else has. There is a reason our wait has been this long and her words in the last paragraph have shown me why.

Here it is:

The song that always makes me think of you is called "Blessings," and it was written by an artist named Laura Story, but my favorite version is sung by the group Mercy River.  The first verse and chorus go like this:

"We pray for blessings, we pray for peace,
Comfort for family, protection while we sleep.
We pray for healing, for prosperity.
We pray for your mighty hand to ease our suffering.
And all the while, you hear each spoken need,
Yet love us way too much to give us lesser things.

Because what if your blessings come through raindrops?
What if your healing comes through tears?
And what if a thousand sleepless nights are what it takes to know you're near?
And what if trials of this life are your mercies in disguise?"

This song makes me think of you because before you were born, I prayed and prayed to become a mother.  It didn't matter to me how I became a mother--your daddy and I started the adoption process at the same time that we started fertility treatments--but when both avenues seemed only to lead to heartache, I started to doubt and fear.  Life got dark and difficult.  An ectopic pregnancy.  Countless negative pregnancy tests.  Lots of contacts from expectant mothers who were considering adoption but eventually chose to parent or chose a different adoptive couple.

I prayed and asked why.  I prayed and asked that God end our wait immediately.  I prayed and asked what He wanted for my life.  I felt confused.  I felt angry.  I didn't understand why such a good and honest desire, to be a mother and give love to a child, wasn't being answered.  The emotions that I felt during those difficult months are captured so well in the words of the second verse of the song:

"We pray for wisdom, your voice to hear,
We cry in anger when we cannot feel you near.
We doubt your goodness, we doubt your love,
As if every promise from your word is not enough.
And all the while, you hear each desperate plea,
And long that we'd have faith to believe.

Because what if your blessings come through raindrops?
What if your healing comes through tears?
And what if a thousand sleepless nights are what it takes to know you're near?
And what if trials of this life are your mercies in disguise?"

Last week, you and I sat outside in the backyard together at your little picnic table and ate brownies and ice cream.  At the faint sound of a train whistle in the distance, you sat up straight and listened intently.  "What's that noise, Mommy?" you asked.  And when I just smiled, you said excitedly, "I hear a train, Mommy!  I hear a train!"

My heart ached with happiness, and I leaned in close. "Give Mama a kiss?" I asked.

You reached for me across the table, your fingers sticky with gooey chocolate, your face smeared with melted ice cream, and planted a peck right on my lips.

In that perfect moment I was reminded, as I am almost daily, that you--you, my perfect little boy--are the reason that God could not give me what I wanted right when I wanted it.  He knew that you were on your way, and He knew that your brave birthparents would find us when the time was right.  He couldn't send us just any baby--He knew that we needed you.

I love this and had to share with my mom. My mom then responded with: I love that song, Jess. I have listened to it often.  Priceless lessons we will one day know why you have waited so long.  Your baby must be so special!!! Love you.

My mom is definitely right :)

A fun video we made with flipagram, enjoy!!

Hunting season has begun!!

Spencer and I love taking our Brittany Spaniel dogs (Sash & Westin) pheasant hunting! We are members of a hunting club that is just about 5 miles from our home. We have been a couple times this year and last weekend we were able to have our Bishop and his adorable twin boys that were in our primary class last year join us!! We adore them and had so much fun!! Here are some pictures of the guys, boys, and the dogs on our fun day!!

Just before the hunt began!!

Halloween 2013

We had a fun Halloween this year!! We went to Spencer's sister's house for dinner and trick or treating!! Spencer and I made fun Halloween treats for the party. I drew the faces while Spencer whipped together the pudding and yogurt!! It was a lot of fun and Spencer is always a good sport with my ideas!!

Spencer's sister had a bunch of costumes, so we decided to throw some on for the kids while trick or treating!! The Incredibles were a big hit and boy did we have fun!!

We had so much fun trick or treating with the nieces and nephews and I always love seeing Spencer interact with them. He helped them a ton, but unfortunately this picture is the only one I got, bummer!

Here is a picture of us with Spencer's sister and brother in law as the potato heads and Spencer's brother as Sully and sister in law as the cow. Fun, fun times!!

Our summer project...

This summer we decided to take on the project of doing some home projects...we were up for the challenge!!

We had decided we were not too fond of our plain, white front door and wanted to do a fun change, so we decided to make it look antique with a splash of red! Spencer is so talented so I could not wait to see the end results!!

Here Spencer is putting plastic over the front entrance so our dogs don't get out and nothing gets in :)

Here is our door almost finished, yet still in the garage. I helped paint :)

Here is the final project!! We love it and it definitely changes the look of our home! We have also received so many nice compliments :)

Our next project was an even bigger task. I sure had no idea just how big it was until it began, but I'm sure glad we did it. Spencer did an amazing job!! He retextured our home...

This picture makes me laugh!! I was drawing a design for our laundry room and anyone can tell you Spencer is a perfectionist, well, he put markers on my ruler, so I could get it just right :). I had to also be productive as Spencer was working on the texture.

This picture is hard to see, but this is our end results of the texture.

Next, paint!! We decided to paint the hall, laundry room, kitchen, and living room. I saw this grey color on a home Spencer had been working on and fell in love with it! It is so pretty!!

Spencer painted the kitchen while I was at work and sent me this picture. I was such a happy girl and could not wait to get home!

This is our laundry room. We did some chevron lines. It looks pretty cute :)

I love decorating my house and with the new paint, we purchased some new decor. Here is a picture of an adorable saying that I just love and had to get :)

Spencer putting up the new decor. I believe I was on cloud nine at this moment. It was so fun to see this hard work pay off!

This is in our living room! I love this! I wanted to do something different on this wall and I'm so glad I chose it. It was quite the chore for Spencer and I to do, but well worth it!

This is in our hallway. I also love this. The vinyl depicts our journey so far and Spencer painted and antiqued the shutters. Once again, I have a talented man!

Our hallway. We love the way it turned out.

We also did work out in the yard. We poured more cement in our driveway to make more parking available. My sister's husband helped along with Spencer's brothers, cousins, and uncle.

My nephew, Andrew, came to play that day as well. He worked out with me and then we bought the guys doughnuts, and then walked to my city's parade. We had a blast! Here we are at the parade! Andrew got a huge bag of candy from the parade! He was one happy boy, he loved it!!

After the parade, the guys were still working on the cement, so I decorated my front door :)

I purchased barstools for $10 and they were blue and orange. We refurbished them and I am in love!!

Our last project of the summer was painting our fence. It was painted on the outside, but needed to be painted on the inside of our yard. Fun, fun times!! Spencer and I had a lot of fun doing these projects together...there's just something about knowing that you can depend on one another :)
